Step 1. Identify one use of prosopopoeia in the play.

  • Who is speaking, and to whom?
  • Whose speech is the speaker reporting?

Step 2. Analyze. Consider these questions as starting points.

  • What is the relationship between speaker and reported? How does the relationship between the two personas affect the credibility of the reported words (is it more or less credible)?  Can the accuracy of the reported words be assessed?
  • Does the material within the reported speech convey information about the past, present, or future?

Step 3. Evaluate based on your analysis. What can we learn by  paying attention to this figure of speech, that we might have missed otherwise?

    • What does Euripides gain by using prosopopoeia at these moments in the play?
    • What is the effect of the reported speech on the listener?  Does the audience receive the reported speech differently from the listener?
    • Does prosopopeia harm or help in an argument? Is it an effective rhetorical strategy for the person who uses it?
