Students will write a final comparative paper (20002500 words and double spaced)
either on concepts/doctrines from Buddhism and Christianity or a social issue today
considered from a Buddhist and Christian perspective. The paper will draw together and
analyze readings from class and, if necessary, outside research.
As you reflect on the readings and your engagement with them, begin to identify
Buddhist and Christian concepts or a social issue that you would like to write on. You
may take your cue from the prompts for each week, or from the questions that arise
from the authors we’ve read or other topics of interest to you.
Based on your proposal and your continued reflections in light of the readings and
discussions and your own research in the second half of the semester, discuss your
comparative concepts or the social issue and demonstrate how through comparison and
dialogue, one can deepen the understanding of each of these traditions but also help
address issues today. As you write the comparison, try to reflect on the significance of
theological inquiry is, why theological inquiry is essential for meaningful action in the
world, and why religious diversity and literacy is important.
As a comparative paper, make sure that you are clear in the definitions of the concepts
of each tradition (and you are not mixing them up). Also, the comparison should not
simply list the similarities and differences but more importantly, what the significance
is of the similarities and differences and what each tradition can learn from the
other (see the sample comparative essays in the submodule).
There should be a clear introduction and conclusion with a strong first person narrative
thread running throughout the paper. Employ inclusive, scholarly language. Use of the
first person is appropriate, though you must take care to substantiate all claims (avoid
opinions make arguments based on evidence hence the emphasis on using sources
and citing them).
Be sure to properly cite any information not your own (not just direct quotes) using the
Chicago Manual of Style footnote and bibliography. For a quick reference, see:
