Operational level leaders bridge the gap between the strategic guidance (centralized planning) and tactical level execution (decentralized execution). Essential to this operational level leadership role is an understanding of the push and pulls of the possible myriad of internal and external forces that influence how the Army, other Service components, and other agencies engage in the execution of their prescribed mission.

Using the other outside-of-course resources, find and select an article that best addresses a contemporary issue/challenge/opportunity that leaders/commanders will have to address/wrestle with as they lead in the Army, other Services and civilian equivalent domains today and in the future. Write a short review and response of the article, and identify the salient points for why you chose this particular article.

Select Article 

Choose a journal, blog, newspaper, or magazine (no newscasts or TV shows) that you believe demonstrates a topic that squadron commanders and / or other leaders will need to be cognitive of and/or wrestle with as they lead in the 21st Century and beyond. The article must adhere to the following guidelines.

  • The article must be relevant to the DoD and/or other Federal agencies and have a leadership focus.
  • You must use a minimum two readings from the Leadership and Command I course curriculum.
  • Article will not be more than 1-year-old.
  • Students must include a copy of the article as an attachment with your review submission.
  • Due to emotional underpinnings; heres a list of topics that are off limits:
    • Politics and articles that speak disparagingly about the Commander-in-Chief
    • Religious topic that demeans/discriminates against any religion
    • Diversity topic that demeans/discriminates against any segment of society
  • Possible themes from the Leadership and Command I course to guide your article search:
    • Leadership Theories, Ethics, Values and the Profession of Arms, Cultivating Organizational Climate, Practice of Command, Leading Change & Innovation, Critical Thinking, Valuing Diversity, The Total Force Integration, Team Dynamics, Mission Command, Leading in the Staff environment, Leading in the Joint, Interagency, Intergovernmental and Multinational environment, Leading in Crisis and Building Resilience
    • Investigate other sources to support your essay’s main points and to gather ideas.

Review/Response and Discussion Question

Write a short review (250-275 words maximum) of the article.  Include the following:

  • Explain why this topic is relevant for leaders/commanders to address.
  • Include how at least two readings from the Leadership and Command I course contribute/correlate to the subject.

Develop and write a Discussion Question related to your article.

  • The question should evoke healthy debate/discourse. Make sure to present the question as an open ended and not a yes/no framework.
