Fighting in war, when a personal choice, is one of the most challenging decisions a person makes. Here are 3 examples: Jefferson Davis, who led the Confederacy in the Civil War even though his father had fought in the American Revolution; Sullivan Ballou, who left his wife and young chidren to be among the first to answer Abraham Lincoln’s call for volunteers to fight at the start of the Civil War; and third, Jesse Givens, who in 2003 voluntarily left his wife and family to fight in the opening stages of the Iraq War.

Watch the video clip on Davis, listen to a reading of Ballou’s last letter to his wife, and read Givens’ last letter to his wife.  Answer the following questions:

1. List the various things Davis did in service to the United States prior to the Civil War.
2. Why did Davis choose to turn against the United States?
3. Why was Ballou “perfectly willing” to leave his family to fight for the Union in the Civil War?
4. How does Givens’ letter to his wife compare to Ballou’s letter to his wife? Are there similarities?

Write at least four full paragraphs.
