This assessment requires you to complete four (4) short responses to the questions below based on your readings in the first half of the unit. Each short answer is worth 10 marks with additional marks for academic writing and referencing,.
Word Count: A maximum of 600 words per question or a total of 2200 – 2400 words for the entire assessment. This includes all text (headings, in-text citations, captions and direct quotes). It excludes the Reference List.
Note: For this assessment, the marker will stop reading when the word count is reached and only award marks on the material read. This applies to each task, you cannot go over 650 words for any one answer.
Task: Respond to the questions below to demonstrate your understanding of key concepts.
1. Explain the dimensions of the 21st Century Numeracy Model (Goos, Geiger & Dole, 2014). Considerations:
  • What do these dimensions mean?
  • Why is it important for teachers in all subjects to understand this model? How is the model reflected in the General Capabilities of the Australian Curriculum?
  • Check Figure 3.1 on p. 60 of your Numeracy or Goos et al. textbook for a diagram of the model. Chapter 3 of your numeracy textbook will help you answer this question.
2. Why use a multiliteracies pedagogy in all subjects in the secondary school context? Considerations:
  • What does it mean to be multiliterate? What are the characteristics of multiliteracies?
  • What is a multiliteracies pedagogy? What are the components of a pedagogy of multiliteracies or the ‘how’ of multilitearcies?
  • Focus examples on a subject other than English
3. What are the Literacy and Numeracy Capabilities in the Australian Curriculum and what does this mean for teaching in subjects other than English and Mathematics?
  • What is literate and numerate thinking?
  • What are the key ideas and interrelated elements of both literacy and numeracy in the Australian Curriculum?
4. What is disciplinary literacy and numeracy? Choose a subject other than English or Mathematics and describe the subject-specific literacies and numeracies used in that discipline/subject area? Alternatively, you can discuss the literacies in the subject of Mathematics and the numeracies in the subject of English.
  • What is disciplinary literacy and numeracy?
  • How is literacy/language and mathematics used in a specific subject/discipline?
  • How are general and technical subject specific vocabulary important when teaching ?
Other Details:
  • Give each short answer a subtitle
  • Your audience – professional educators or pre-service and/or qualified teachers. This means your writing needs to use educational terminology and a fairly formal tone with credible evidence supporting your claims. Your answers must demonstrate you have been actively engaging with the learning materials and reading more widely on the topics
  • Relevant graphics or visual images, photos, tables, diagrams can be included to support your ideas or demonstrate your thinking, but they must be referenced using APA(7) if taken from another source. Note: captions and referencing are included in the word count
  • You need to include citations and analysis of evidence in your answers, but the structure does not have to be as rigid as a formal academic paper. You can be more creative with structure and emphasise important points in a range of ways: short paragraphs, bullet points, bold text, italics, underlining, using headings
  • Support your ideas with academic sources using APA(7).
  • Your reading list for the short answers prepared should include 6-10 readings accessed and referenced across your responses.
