Overview

For this assignment, you will reflect on your own readingbeliefs and practices and examine how each experience impacts yourinstructional decisions and learners.  Youwill create a literacy journal to demonstrate different experiences learned aboutadolescent literacy.

Instructions

Create a literacy journal to demonstrate different experienceslearned about adolescent literacy.  Thejournal will include six activities and use current APA format.  The journal must include in-text citationsand references to all resources used for this assignment in current APA format.

Use the Literacy History Journal AssignmentTemplate to complete Sections 2-5 of this assignment.

Includethe following:

2.    Reading from a Critical Stance

Consider a printed item AND television program and/orphotograph that you might present to your students in your content areaclassroom to review critically. Include the selected items as your samples.Then, answer the following questions using complete sentences.

Reading from a Critical Stance: Print (e.g. books, newspapers,magazines, song lyrics, etc.)

      What is the viewpoint expressed?

      What does the author want you to think?

      What voices might be missing?

      How might alternative perspectives berepresented?

      What action might you take based upon what youhave learned?

Television or Photographs

      Describe the video or photograph.

      Why are they there?

      What does the videographer/photographer want youto think?

      What or who is missing from the video/photograph?

      How might an alternative perspective berepresented?

      How would that contribute to your understandingof the video or photograph from a critical stance?

      What action might you take based upon what youhave viewed?

Section 2 should be a minimum of 200 words. Include wordcount at the end of this section. Not every question/prompt needs to beaddressed, but thorough answers are required using full sentences written inparagraph form.

 

  1. Vocabulary Instruction
    Traditional approaches to vocabulary instruction, like writing long lists of vocabulary words and definitions out of textbooks, are no longer considered best practice.  Using research to support your ideas, write a paragraph response to each of the following prompts related to vocabulary instruction:
    1. How will you use more innovative vocabulary practices like the ones described in your texts in your specific content area?  What specific instructional routines are you hoping to implement?
    2. How will you promote these practices with your colleagues who might take a traditional approach to vocabulary instruction?

Section 3 should be a minimum of 250 words and include 2in-text citations from research or the textbook to support your ideas andexperiences. Include word count at the end of this section.

  1. Instructional Routines
    Select three instructional routines from the Fisher, Bronzo, & Frey (2015) textbook that you plan to integrate into your future classroom.

For each routine:

1.    Write a brief description (50 words) of the routine andexplain how you will use it in your content area classroom. Include whether itis used before, after, or during reading.

2.    Insert a classroom-ready sample of the activity. You donot need to create the activity yourself. You can use a teaching website tolocate an appropriate activity or example. (Be sure to cite/reference usingcurrent APA format if using another example or source.)

 

5.    Content Area Reading Lesson Plans- 6-12 grade Social Studies

1.    Locate three different lesson plans that interest you.

2.    Evaluate how you would use these lesson plans in yourclassroom.

3.    What changes would you make to the lesson plan? Usesupport from the textbook or other research to support your instructionaldecisions.

Each lesson plan reflection should be aminimum of 100 words and include at least one in-text citation from research orthe textbook to support your instructional decisions. In total, this sectionshould be 300 words. Include word count at the end of this section.
