Tracking Symbols through Lord of the Flies

As you read through Lord of the Flies, youve paid particular attention to one of the symbols that weve been exploring as a class (the island, fire, Piggys glasses, the beast, the conch, etc.). Now you will combine all of your knowledge of the symbol in a 2.5-3 page paper. As weve read and discussed, the ways in which our symbols have been used have changed, and the various characters have used them differently. For this essay, you will need to suggest a general meaning for your chosen symbol, but you have some options regarding how you wish to support your claim.

Option A: Using three different characters

Explain the meaning of your symbol as it relates to three different characters. How does each characters use of the symbol and attitude towards the symbol shape your understanding of it? For this option, your thesis should suggest a general meaning for the symbol. In the body of your essay, you should support that thesis by explaining how three different characters have used and/or treated the symbol. Be sure to include lines from the text to support the points you make in the body of your essay.

Option B: Using one character

Explain the meaning of your symbol as it relates to one of the major characters at three different points in the novel. How does a particular characters use of the symbol and attitude towards the symbol over time shape your understanding of it? For this option, your thesis should suggest a general meaning for the symbol. In the body of your essay, you should support that thesis by explaining how your chosen character has used and/or treated the symbol at three different points in the book. Be sure to include lines from the text to support the points you make in the body of your essay.

(i chose A)
