Your task is to write a four to five page essay in double-spaced, proofread, academic prose that addresses one of the two following prompts following all guidelines for writing found on the syllabus (and on forthcoming handouts on introductory and concluding paragraphs). You should anchor your answer to the prompt, regardless of which question you choose, in a small number of passages, probably no more than four or five (you may cite more passages, but do so only to unpack and explain the ideas in the main passages). Both ask you to think about how the technology of the novel produced something: a feeling (“empathy”) or a way of conceptualizing the self (“character”).

O N E. Empathy and reading. According to Lynn Hunt and Ben Marcus, one of the most important things about literature is the way it produces empathy (or sympathy, or identification). Both back up their claims by drawing, in part, on neuroscience’s account of how reading affects the human brain. For Hunt and Marcus, there is something about telling and hearing/reading stories—narratives—that allows people to feel certain things about and between each other. You should begin by explaining, with explicit citation from course readings, what empathy is and how narratives enable it, and then you should analyze how this works in relation to either Frankenstein or The Bell Jar. You may analyze how these novels produce empathy/identification between readers (stick to the reader you know: YOU!) and characters, or you may analyze how the novel represents empathy (or its failure!) between characters (or between characters and literary narratives).

Guide:
1. Follow the instructions for the intro paragraph doc that I have attached to this.
2. Write about Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.
3. Quote the text. The quotation, must be part of one of your grammatically correct sentences. I have the Norton Critical Edition of the novel edited by J. Paul Hunter so please find quotes from that.
4. Please feel free to contact me whenever with any questions.
