It is crucial for us to study our history for many reasons. Not only does it provide us with a solid understanding of how we got from “there” to “here,” but it also helps us to learn from our collective mistakes leading to better decision-making in the present. In the following quote, this concept is illustrated: “History also provides a terrain for moral contemplation. Studying the stories of individuals and situations in the past allows a student of history to test his or her own moral sense, to hone it against some of the real complexities individuals have faced in difficult settings.” (Stearns 1998) Without the knowledge of how people in the past dealt with mistakes and challenges, we might be less inspired to take conflicts head on in our own lives.

We also should study history because it helps us to understand people that are different from ourselves, particularly from other cultures. When the failures and triumphs of another people are fully understood, there is a higher likelihood that we might develop a sense of empathy and even brotherhood with said people. Not only do we become more well-rounded individuals when we comprehend the history of our world in its entirety, but we also stand a chance to one day unify and make many much-needed global improvements.

Although many of us are frequently lost in our futures, planning and plotting, there is a vital need to look back upon what has happened in the past. In doing so, time comes full circle and we can see the grand picture quite clearly. One should hope that the words of Voltaire forever ring true in the hearts of man so that we may one day have a more stable and beautiful world.

If we do not learn from history, we are destined to repeat it. Many great and terrible mistakes have been made by human beings over time, and history not only teaches us how to foresee them, but how to potentially avert them as well. The knowledge and understanding of history can mean the difference between a future where humanity is closer than ever to fulfilling its potential for enlightenment, or the inevitable fall into another dark age.
