Examples of recent corporate collapses in Australia include Dick Smith (electronics), Masters’ Hardware, Hillgrove (mining), Queensland Nickel (Clive Palmer’s company), Ansett Airlines, Home Australia (builder), Linc Energy, Pumpkin Patch (clothes retailer), Laura Ashley (retail) and Mountain Design. Examples of corporate collapses internationally have included BCCI (UK bank), Arthur Anderson (accounting), Royal Bank of Scotland, Carrian (Hong Kong), Punjab National Bank (India) and Kingfisher Airlines (India). I am sure there are other examples you can think of that you may wish to examine. Indeed, I am more than happy if you choose a company you are familiar with in your country. I have just provided some examples as thoughts. 2. Once you have chosen your company/corporation, I want the team leader to advise me of that choice by email. 3. Then correctly identify and analyze the specific event(s) which led to the loss/closure. Describe the environment in which the business was operating, discussing in the context of the theories and frameworks presented in this subject (look at macro and micro factors). 4. Describe the environmental factors leading to the loss by categorizing these events into the elements of the business environment espoused in this subject. In other words, use the theories learned to apply them to this case study. 5. Accurately describe the response by the business which was unsuccessful. 6. Also, mention where the business could have performed better in terms of avoiding the disaster. 7. Provide a set of recommendations for future reference – ie, things to avoid and importantly how to better scan the environment, lest these collapses do not occur. The structure of the assignment should follow standard case study structure: • Introduction and background information• Body of information and discussion of relevant topics• Conclusion, summary and recommendations
