This module is all about the question of development and how we define and measure progress across countries. In this discussion, write one paragraph about what you think the goal of progress and development should be and how we should measure it. This question is not asking about personal progress, but rather think about comparing countries and what development should look like.

I think that the goal of progress should be to make a moral society. I think that progress is the spiritual maturity of a society while development is more physical. A developed nation could still be regressing into the past in terms of morality. This could happen by committing genocide for example. On the flip side of that, a progressive society doesn’t have to be developed. It is harder to find an example of this because a lot of the time the two go hand in hand. Development is measured by the technology available to the people of a nation. When a nation starts coming together to live in cities it is considered developed and it is more developed if those cities grow into metropolises. Progress on the other hand is a societies moral standing. The United States is considered progressive because we care about the less fortunate. We want to help those who we believe can’t help themselves. This is what makes a country progressive. I think we could measure this by looking at the welfare state of a nation. Sweden for example is considered very progressive and it has a large welfare state, the same could be said about Canada.

I think that the goal of progress for each country should include morality progression, but also intellectual progression. As you grow smarter as a country and develop new and excited ways to live, you must make sure that your morality is growing as well. To have one by itself wouldn’t work. With intellectual alone, the care of the world would only be on what is the next best thing and how can we become more superior. With morals alone, you will have a great love for everyone in your nation, but will be stuck unable to progress fully. By combining the two, you will have a peaceful ever progressing country.
