One of the most compelling sentences in your readings this module is this line from your textbook: To be a competent cross-cultural communicator in the 21st century requires understanding U.S. history, grasping the nuances of diverse immigrant communities from various parts of the world and developing sensitivity and humanity in reporting and writing about people whose experiences may be far removed from the typical U.S. journalist, public relations professional or advertising copy writer.

In other words, context is key and history is the key to context.

For your activity for this module, I want you to do some research.

First, select a local race-related or cultural issue that interests you. The issue must be in any part of Florida (You don’t have to feel a personal connection to the issue, but the assignment will be more interesting if you do.) It might be an issue that’s ongoing today, or it might be something you remember from a few years ago.

Then, put the issue in historical context by using newspaper archives to research the issue and its surrounding circumstances. Look for coverage of your issue in real time (historically speaking). Depending on the issue you select, you might look for coverage of the entire thing or choose to focus on a specific component. You might do your research from a narrow timeframe or span a few different periods of time.

Finally, write a one- to two-page reflection explaining your issue and its historical context. What did you learn about your issue by putting it into historical context? In what ways did you see fault lines and privilege at work?

Include references.

Note: I don’t expect you to write a 20-page research paper on the nuances of your issue. My goal for you as you complete this assignment is that you will learn the general historical context of something you might have otherwise accepted without really thinking about it. Picture yourself as a practicing journalist or communications professional one day. Learn now that understanding the historical significance and context of — most things — will change your perspective and may change the way you do your job.
