OVERVIEW
Chronic diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, asthma, and COPD, are common and caused by a combinationof behavioral, social, and genetic factors. While the United States and the world have made great strides in reducing deathfrom chronic diseases in the 20th century, there are still millions of people around the world who die each year. While thereare policies and behaviors that we know can reduce mortality and improve quality of life, there is still much more we need tounderstand about chronic diseases.
Placing limits on the sale of tobacco and establishing smoke-free workplace laws are twoEXAMPLES of law and policies intended to reduce cancer rates in the United States. What aresome NEW policies that may help reduce the risk of chronic illnesses like cancer?
The goal of weekly discussion activities are to bring new ideas to learn from and teach your peers. As students, yourthoughts and interpretations are crucial to the depth of understanding among your classmates. You all have so much to bringto the table and a discussion platform is a wonderful opportunity to do so.
