“OVERVIEW
Our understanding of substance use and addictive behaviors has grown tremendously over the
last century and continues to expand as we learn more about the prominent role that the brain
and body play in addiction. In this module, we reviewed the more widely used legal and illegal
drugs and behaviors that affect health. More than 40 million Americans ages 12 and older—or
more than 1 in 7 people—abuse or are addicted to nicotine, alcohol or other drugs. This is
more than the number of Americans with heart conditions (27 million), diabetes (26 million) or
cancer (19 million).
Brainstorm ideas for campaigns and interventions you think may be
relevant and effective in preventing drug use. Why do you think these

The goal of weekly discussion activities are to bring new ideas to learn from and teach your
peers. As students, your thoughts and interpretations are crucial to the depth of understanding
among your classmates. You all have so much to bring to the table and a discussion platform is
a wonderful opportunity to do so.
You may have differing opinions from your peers and that is absolutely okay and encouraged.
We must appreciate the learning environment and foster expression and information. While
differing opinions are welcomed, everyone must be respectful of their peers. We all have a
different story and experience that leads to the depth to our feelings and beliefs.
Anyone being intentionally disrespectful to their classmates will receive a 0 on this assignment
and must meet with the instructor for a meeting.
