The Major Project of this course requires you to write a paper that summarizes how a given culture is viewed in American films. You will select three films (minimum) to cover in your paper. At least two of the films in your paper should be films you have not seen before. Your paper will not be a summary of the films. Instead you will be writing a short article of how a particular culture is portrayed in film, using your chosen films and additional readings in your argument. You are expected to find readings about your particular culture (e.g., book chapters, journal articles, on-line articles). There should be many resources available on the web. Your paper should be five full pages of text double-spaced (no more than eight pages of text). You must also have a reference page. APA style is preferred. You must cite your references. The major project will be worth 300 points. T

 

You select your own culture for your project. You can select one from those below, but there are many more to choose from including: the elderly, the mentally impaired, NYC, the west, rural, little people, lesbians, Midwest, Amish, Fundamentalists… I realize that some of the categories in the syllabus are rather global (e.g., Asian-American) and possibly you might want to focus on Chinese-American or Korean-American culture. If you have any questions about whether a particular culture is appropriate, please ask me. In the selection process, you might want to consider what films and readings are available. Use Google or another search engine to find possible films
