Papers are to be 4-7 pages in length, double spaced, 12 point font, and uploaded to Blackboard in either .doc or .pdf format. Formal papers will not be accepted via email. 

Choose one of the following topics and write about it. You are to quote specifics from the text in order to back yourself up. Whenever quoting from a long, narrative poem in parts, please be sure to give book/part # using Roman numerals and line # using Arabic numerals: “This is an example of a quote from a narrative poem,” (II: 215-216). This is proper MLA citation format.

1. Why does Homer wait so long to introduce us to Odysseus? What are the benefits of this tactic – and what does Homer expect his audience to do once they finally meet Odysseus? What does Homer teach us by using this tactic?;

2. How does the idea of repentance play a part in  The Odyssey? What are certain characters guilty of – and how? Focus your attention on either Odysseus or Telemachus. If choosing this topic, you will have to explain what repentance is and how it works.;

3. What does  The Odyssey teach the audience regarding family? How is the audience to view familial responsibility, and how does this discussion tie to Greek ideas regarding the afterlife? Are these ideas pushed by Homer still relevant today?;

4. Focus on one of two relationships: Athena and Telemachus or Athena and Odysseus. How does your relationship of choice function throughout the text – and how does this relationship tie back heavenly guidance / the importance of free will?
