Thanks for taking on my paper. The course name is nation and nationalism in middle eastern literature. We basically look literature from around the 19th century in countries like turkey and iran. Basically I want you to use 2 books here..one is The Alien by Yakub Kadri and second is The Stray Dog by Sadeq Hedayat.
So basically you can talk about how the nation in the alien is an imagined community, there are people living inside the borders of a land yet do not hold similar beliefs or ideologies, so they exist in this kind of imagined community, which I have also attached a theroy about this by Anderson. There are lots of talk about in this book. As you know turkey was becoming a republic at this point and some people were muslims, some were looking to the modern future, there was the ıntellectual elite in istanbul, and then there were the farmers who were just indifferent to the whole thing. So theres lots to talk about in terms of nation here, you can also give some historical backdrop to back your points up, just one source will be fine for that. Its not really a history course, its more about the literature, so if you can atleast back up the historical points you can make to some source that would be cool.
The stray dog by sadeq hedayat, the angle I want to come in on in this story is the analysis of the state. The stray dog can be seen as a citizen and how he tries to navigate society but is always downtrodden on. At the time Iran had just come out of the revolution…the communists teamed up with the muslims and they got rid of the modern Shah dynasty. The shahs were too western for them and what replaced them was an islamic reupblic. The stray dog in a sense is a kuffar or a cast aside being by society, he is not treated fairly and he is abadoned. This can be see as how the new nation treats those that are different to them or those that opposed the revolution. Perhaps the owner of the dog could be seen as the state and the owner (representative of the state)…when the dog was with the owner everything was provided for him, he had shelter, food and safety but now the owner is gone (the communıst state) he is left to fend for himself…so this could be a pro-communism angle and anti capitalist…im just trying to give some ideas here..but as it is with all literature, as long as you can back up your position with evidence from the story and some secondary source, and you show you,ve understood the reading then you should be fine.

In terms of The Alien by Yakub it would be good if you could use other parts of the book – what I have sent is just excerpts – so please try and use more than just teh excerpts I sent.
