Communication and interpretation of scientific studies is critical to ensure research is understood by a large audience. The effective communication of research can result in reaching an audience otherwise incapable of understanding research results as well as promote debate about the merits of the research and its context. Policy leaders, politicians, and the general public, as well as many time-pressed researchers, require summarized and thoroughly critiqued research in order to remain informed and make decisions based on the latest research, as well as direct future research efforts.
For this assignment, you will write a short communication on a natural resource management and sustainability article that interests you. Length should not exceed 500 words, or 2 pages doubled spaced. All assignments should adequately summarize the research findings, discuss the context and implications of the results, and offer appropriate criticism of the findings as well as identify future research needs. The article should be written for a general audience and include 2-3 references to other research work in order to adequately place the findings into context.
Pay close attention to how you are going to grab the reader’s attention, which parts of the article are the most important to get across, and where does the research fit in with other research or pressing issues. In short, make sure you give the reader a reason to read the article!
Assignments will be marked for content and writing quality and will be discussed in a later class. The assignment is worth 10% of your final mark.
