A literature review with a descriptive qualitative approach will be utilized for this scholarly project. A survey will be completed by nurse practitioners to assess current opinions on their role and perception of use in primary care. There continues to be a recognized need for change on the approach and utilization of nurse practitioners in providing care in the primary care setting (Kirkman et al., 2018). Do nurse practitioners feel their skills are being utilized appropriately, do they feel they are an asset to the practice and their collaborating physician, are patients willing to see them and feel they are receiving quality care? These are a sampling of the types of questions that will be addressed in the survey.
With the use of the literature review and survey, the intentions of this scholarly project is to address potential concerns and perceptions of the nurse practitioner in primary care. The data will be collected through the use of the Nurse Practitioner Primary Care Organizational Climate Questionnaire (NP-PCOCQ). This questionnaire was developed to specifically measure a nurse practitioners presence in context to an organizations setting in primary care. The hope from this scholarly project is raised awareness with a basis for future research. Nurse practitioners are an essential part to patient care and their contributions to primary care need to be recognized and optimized for continued growth in this role for future nurse practitioners.”
