1- Americans eat many times more simple sugars than what is recommended. Some scientists have even gone so far as to label excess sugar consumption an ‘addiction.’ Too much sugar has been linked with obesity, diabetes and several other health issues. See for a good summary of the problem. Please comment on the increased use of sugar in our diets and what you think can be done about it. 2- So, I couldn’t believe it, but a few years ago, I saw a commercial on TV promoting High Fructose Corn Syrup. This just blew my mind. It’s a popular sweetener added to many processed foods and has been linked to several health issues (including obesity and diabetes,) yet it was ubiquitous in our food supply. Please comment here about what you know about HFCS and what you think about it. Why do you think HFCS is so widely used? Any tips in minimizing consumption?
The good news – the use of HFCS in US food manufacturing has greatly decreased in recent years. This is due to public outcry – an example of the demands of consumers really making a difference. Comments?
3- Artificial sweeteners are incredibly popular in this country – especially in soft-drinks and snacks, not to mention as tabletop sweeteners. After reading through the notes and any internet research you have done, tell us your own thoughts on the increased popularity and use of artificial sweeteners. Do you see any dangers? Any benefits? There have been a number of studies regarding the health dangers of saccharin, Splenda and, especially, Nutrasweet (aspartame,) yet the FDA continues to approve these substances – thoughts?
