Opioid Epidemic Analysis Paper
Opioid overdoses have caused many people harmnot just those who have died, but their family and friends
who have suffered an emotional loss as well. Its clear from an objective standpoint that there is a rising
number of overdose deaths and that it has been getting worse. But what makes us define something as
a social problem?
Sociologists who study the construction of social problems are interested in more than just the nature of an
issue and the harm that it may cause. A social constructionist approach goes beyond the question of is this a
problem?
A social constructionist encourages us to think critically about what comes to our attention as a social problem,
as well as why some issues are not defined as social problems despite their causing harmsometimes even
more harm than those that we think of as social problems.
Students will write a paper examining the status of the opioid problem in the United States, how it has been
defined as social problem and solutions to address the problem.
