Overview & Goals:
Speeches that change attitudes, beliefs, or values are typically called speeches to “convince.” Speeches to change individual behavior are typically called speeches to “actuate.” Speeches to change a group’s or an organization’s behavior are typically called “policy” speeches. Present an 8-10-minute speech that attempts to change _____. Some topic ideas may include convincing your peers to be more accepting of an unpopular view, identifying a serious problem on ENMU campus and detailing a plan or policy that can solve the problem, or choosing a political issue or a public service issue that needs to be sold to the public. Follow all principles of effective public speaking that we have learned during this class, including effective delivery, appropriate style, organization, strong introduction and conclusion, using supporting material, and audience analysis. This speech also will focus on credibility, rational argument, and ethical emotional appeal.
To Do/Checklist:
Cite at least six different credible research sources. Works cited page is not included in page requirement.
Use at least three different elements of style.
Use a two-sided argument and at least three other strategies for adapting your message to the audience (see Chapter 17).
Provide a multifaceted plan to include local, statewide, or national issues (for policy speeches).
Submit a final constructed outline to Blackboard area entitled “Persuasive Speech” . Minimum of 4 pages including the requirements of Times New Roman, 12-point font, 1-inch margins, double-spaced.
Persuasive Surveys
Prior to the persuasive assignment, you will need to survey all members of the audience. You may gather information about your audience through various ways including:
Fixed-response questions: Give participants a specific set of answers to choose from (i.e. multiple choice, true or false, or select-all-that-apply questions). These kinds of questions are especially beneficial in providing data from which to seek out common ground.
Scaled questions: Measure the intensity of feelings within a range of fixed responses (i.e. strongly agree to strongly disagree). These kinds of questions can determine prior exposure and disposition.
Open-ended questions: Invite respondents to write an answer of their choosing. These kinds of questions can identify issues that you might not have considered while also giving audience members the chance to give individual answers.
Interviews: Conduct a face-to-face interview with all the audience members and ask a variety of survey questions mentioned above. The interaction allows you to access stories and opinions that might not be revealed by a survey; however, you must consider your subjects and their diverse backgrounds.
*Your verbal speech delivery will be graded based on the above and below mentioned criteria. Each category must be included and completed to receive full credit.
