1) Answer these questions by referring only to Plato’s text. Do not consult the preface or the analyses
of other people who comment on Plato’s text. Although it is often a good idea to read such things for
the background or clues to understanding a text that they provide one with, for our purposes it is best
that you try to answer the questions on your own. Most times, I can tell right away when you are
using outside sources and you lose points for doing so. 2) Do not be surprised if you find it
somewhat difficult to understand Plato. After all, he is from a different age and culture. Be patient
with him! Some of the questions below have answers that can be found word for word in the text (in
which case you should quote them), whereas others require thought (just do your best). 3) In
philosophy it is never acceptable to give a simple "yes" or "no" answer. You always have to justify
your answer. 4) You do not have to write out the questions. Make sure, however, that you number
your answers. 5) It is often useful to quote Plato in order to support your point. The quote, however,
should not replace your point.
