1. I have provided you with eight photographs from newspapers. (Photos provided in this module on the PHOTO page).
2. Choose ONE of the photos and read it as a text and analyze how the visual components of it transfer messages, ideas, or feelings to you as a viewer. This is a visual analysis assignment, and the focus of your essay should be more on the image itself (the visual text) informed by the background information (the context). You’ll see a caption underneath each photo.
3. Your analysis should be oriented around a central theme including but not limited to home, health, identity, racism, human rights, refugees, education, climate change, the environment,etc.
4. You should first define and then explore that central theme by analyzing the visual elements or techniques employed within the image.
5. Next, choose a second image of a similar theme and compare it with the first one. You will search for this second photo independently. You can choose another picture of a related topic with a different historical, geographical, or political background. Here is the link to the New York Times Year in Pictures for 2021:
What really matters is how you as a viewer/reader- can relate them to each other in terms of a central theme by analyzing angle of vision, depth of field, color, light, shadow, etc. The depth of your analysis matters. Be a thoughtful viewer and a creative writer!
7. Use formal academic language. Write in the third person.
8. Length: 2-3 pages in MLA format.
