1. What are the sources of political power and influence on public organizations?
Describe how the following entities can influence public managers and public organizations. What formal and informal authority do they have that enables them to exert such influence? Pick three of the following: public opinion, media, interest groups, clients and constituents, legislative bodies, chief executive, courts, other agencies, and other levels of government and the public policy process.
2. Why is the public policy process important to public organizations and public managers?
Choose a policy example and its associated influences. What main actors are closely involved with the policy? Who are the major stakeholders? How would you describe the relationships and influences of all of the parties involved?
3. What is your description of this theory?
Choose two of the following concepts or theories discussed in Chapter 5 and provide your own summary. What are key principles of this concept or theory? Why do you believe it is important to the study of public organizations? If possible, provide an example that illustrates the concept you are describing. (Choose from the following: iron triangles, networks, “hollow” government, “garbage can” policy-making, or collaboration).
