Positive Psychology in the Military
A growing concern/epidemic faced in the military today is the alarming rise and consistent statistics dealing with suicide. According to Lamothe (2018), the rate of suicide among active-duty service members has risen over the past five years. Additionally, 541 service members died by suicide in 2018 (Lamothe, 2018).
It is difficult to list all the possible reasons for these statistics. Many Soldiers attribute the idea of suicidal ideation with feelings of hopelessness, loneliness, or forms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The Army has tried, through multiple programs, to build resiliency in Soldiers. The idea is to increase knowledge and awareness and make it more acceptable to reach out for help. Implementation of programs like the Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) and Ask, Care, Escort (ACE) has been helpful, but do these programs provide enough? The use and implementation of positive psychology can directly affect the future of suicidal ideation across the military.
According to Ackerman (2019), “Positive psychology is the scientific study of what makes life most worth living” (p. 1). Soldiers, just like all other humans, show a tendency to focus on weaknesses instead of building the good and positive aspects of situations. Implementation and use of the pillars of positive psychology have been proven to increase satisfaction and resilience in subjects who are depressed or show suicidal ideations (Ackerman, 2019).
The PERMA model is a widely recognized and influential model in positive psychology. The acronym PERMA focuses on five facets of well-being:
1. Positive Emotions
2. Engagement
3. (Positive) Relationships
4. Meaning
5. Accomplishment / Achievement
As more research is produced through the use and implementation of this model, the theory of positive psychology can be harnessed to help Soldiers work through issues of suicidal ideation. Resilience is a learned skill, and focusing and training on the five elements of the PERMA model, and the use of positive psychology as a base will undoubtedly give Soldiers the tools to work through thoughts of suicide and give them the strength to reach out for help.
