Introduction
The current society is filled with social media. Everything we do we end up taking photos and videos and posting them on social media for everyone to see. It is good to post pictures and videos on social media for the world to see. However, posting videos and photos can sometimes be dangerous to ourselves. We post pictures, and in some social media, we usually do not know all the people who view our posts. What makes it even more dangerous is that after they have viewed our posts, we do not know their reaction to this. It might be dangerous now or even in the future.
Excellent examples are the pictures and the videos that we post on social media of us partying. It is one thing to enjoy a party, but the posts are a different thing. This is because the posts are seen by our families, our friends, our enemies, and even our future employers. The problem is are you comfortable with future employers and family members going through the photos and the picture that you posted during your leisure time (O’Keeffe & Clarke-Pearson 2011). Some will judge your c character using your posts, and this might be very dangerous for your future career.
Social media platforms in most circumstances give us the impression of how perfect the lives of other people are. When we go through other people post, we try to compare our lives with their lives, and this influences us to post pictures similar to those we see also to give other viewers the impression of how our lives are perfect. Since it is building an image, we end up nurturing a powerful lying character called embellishment. We end up creating other lies to cover up the lies we post on social media. Instead of focusing on our true selves, we end up creating a fantasy. This is dangerous because it stunts our maturity.
Like everybody else, we all want attention, and this is replicated in social media when we all want to trend and get a high number of views. To trend, we sometimes do extreme things only to be recorded and post the video on social media (Pascoe 2011). Some of the outrageous things that we end up doing might be physically dangerous, and sometimes they might be humiliating. We sometimes end up sustaining severe injuries. In most cases, we are not prepared for the consequences when the posts are uploaded on social media.
With the hunger for attention, we sometimes end up humiliating others in our posts to get a higher number of views. Every time people do embarrassing things or doing things that lack integrity, we all find ourselves taking out our recording devices, take pictures and videos and upload them on our social media pages without even considering the consequences. This sometimes leads to cyberbullying and can be dangerous because some people also commit suicide because of social media bullying. We end up destroying other people reputation, personalities, and even their self-esteem.
Conclusion
We should be careful a lot on what we post on our social media pages. It might be dangerous to our reputation and other peoples’ reputations too. We should instead embrace our true selves and post the pictures, videos, and comments that we know will not have any consequences on our life as well as the lives of other people.
