Decide on a deviant act that violates a social norm and make plans to perform it. (NOTE: You should break a minor norm or a “folkway.” DO NOT break any laws or “mores.”) Then, perform this act in front of a group of people. It could be done in front of friends, family, in public, or wherever else others will be in a position to view and judge your behavior. (Be sure that you perform the deviant act long enough, or repeat it enough times, to gather responses from approximately 7-10 people.) Your “audience” should not know why you are behaving as you are—at least not until after you have compiled enough information to accomplish each of the following goals:
- Provide a brief and adequate description of the setting in which your performance took place. Include any and all information that you feel is relevant to the situation.
- Explain and contextualize the deviant act that you performed. Why is it deviant? What role does the setting/time/place play in the labeling of this behavior as “deviant”?
- Describe how you felt while performing the act. Would you feel differently had you acted this way in a different setting?
- Describe how you perceived others to have felt as they were noticing your performance. Do you think everybody responded in the same way? Why or why not?
- Analyze your experience, and the experiences of others using relevant course materials/concepts.
