John F. Kennedy used his Address to the Greater Houston Ministerial Association, delivered in September 1960 to more than six hundred clergymen, including rabbis, Roman Catholic priests, and southern Baptist preachers (Kemper 289) to settle the so-called religious issue of his campaign for President: the fact that he was a practicing Catholic. Many historians consider this to be the best campaign speech that Kennedy delivered, and they credit it with his improbable victory over Richard Nixon later that year.
