Assessment Description

One of the roles of a reading/literacy specialist is to advocate for literacy instruction. In that role, they frequently must provide professional development for classroom teachers to improve literacy instruction school or districtwide.

Imagine you are in the process of interviewing for the lead reading/literacy specialist position in your local school district. One of the responsibilities of this position is to institute professional development programs on literacy instruction for all teachers within the district. To prepare for your interview, create a professional development plan to present to the district administrators advocating for effective literacy practices and policy.

 Address the following in your plan:

  • Rationale for advocating for professional development on effective literacy instruction within the district.
  • Description of the types of data you will compile to meet the literacy needs of all students.
  • Description of how you will establish norms for the role of the reading/literacy specialist.
  • Discussion of opportunities for the reading specialist to collaborate with and support classroom teachers (PLCs, grade level lesson planning, etc.)
  • Description of at least two professional development topics you plan to include throughout the school year.
  • Summary of at least two culturally responsive instructional strategies that would be included in professional development sessions.

While APA style format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.
