Mexica codices are manuscripts containing both images and texts that contain information about Mexica history, science, land tenure, sacred rituals, and tribute. They were made both before and after the sixteenth-century encounter with the Spanish colonizers. In this assignment, you will learn about a contemporary Chicana artist named Sandy Rodriguez who makes artwork inspired by the codices. Then you will make your own codex including at least three symbols from Ancient Mesoamerica illustrating something such as an historic or current event, a personal journey, a belief, or it could even be something mundane….the route you take to the grocery store for example.

Step 1:  Read this L.A. Times article on the work of Sandy Rodriguez and answer the following questions. (Worth 20 points)

1. What is the significance of the title, Codex Rodriguez-Mondragn?

2. What is the overall theme of the Codex Rodriguez-Mondragn?

3. What is amate? Why did Rodriguez choose to use it in this work?

4. When did Rodriguez first use cochineal as an artistic medium?

5. Why does Rodriguez include depictions of herself as a tlacuila in her artwork?

Step 2:  Watch  where she discusses her work and artistic process.  (No questions to answer.)

Step 3: Think about how you would portray a story, a journey, a current or historic event, something that happened to you, or even a belief/idea just with symbols and pictures.  In your drawing include at least three symbols from the academic text, The Gods and Symbols of the Ancient Mexico and the Maya.  Download The Gods and Symbols of the Ancient Mexico and the Maya.  In the written summary, you can explain how the symbols relate to your story.  For example, you might use the drawing of the goddess Ixchel in a number of ways.  Her name means “Lady Rainbow” and she is associated with childbirth so she might be used as a general symbol of rebirth or as a stand-in for a mother or ancestor, or even just an older woman. You can also add in your own symbols to supplement the story.

Step 4:  Write a one to two paragraph written explanation of your codex. What symbols did you use from the Ancient Mexico/the Maya and what do they mean? (worth 80 points)

Step 5:  Put the answers to the L.A. Times article questions and your written explanation of the codex in one document and upload to the Project 2, Part 1 submission box.

Step 6: Upload a photo/scan of your codex image to Project 2, Part 2 submission box. (worth 50 points)

Important note: This is not art class and so I am not grading for artistic ability. If you want to use color or just do a pencil drawing, those are both fine options. You can trace the symbols you incorporate from The Gods and Symbols text and even use stick figures. It is also up to you how to arrange the drawing. It can be like the mural in Project 1 or something like the Florentine Codex with vertical strips of scenes or even like the Codex Mendoza frontispiece which was one large drawing.  The artists/scribes in Mesoamerica were so creative in the way they arranged the storytelling – it wasn’t always linear so feel free to do what organization you want. And the subject matter can be whatever you want.  Some students have turned in stories of their personal journey in life but others have invented stories.
