Independent and Dependent Variables:The Independent Variable (IV) is the social/identifying element that may have an impact on the Dependent Variable (DV). For example, two common IV’s that we study are race and age. The race or age of the accused may have an impact on whether or not the accused is prosecuted.
The Dependent Variable is the social element that varies based on how the independent variable interacts with it, such as prison sentence length.
I think of it like this: The dependent variable (prison sentence length) depends on the independent variable (race of offender).
Examples:
A convicted felons’ prison sentence length (dependent variable) may vary by felons’ race (independent variable). The prison sentence length depends on the race of the felon.
A convicted felons’ prison sentence length (dependent variable) may vary by felons’ economic class (dependent variable). The prison sentence length depends on the economic class of the felon.
Compared with men (independent variable), women (independent variable) receive lighter prison sentences (dependent variable) for the same offenses.
Juvenile offenders sentenced to juvenile facilities (dependent variable) are more likely to have committed a violent offense (dependent variable) when compared with non-violent juvenile offenders (independent variable).
Black juveniles and adults (independent variable) are more likely to have criminal justice contact (dependent variable) than White juveniles and adults (independent variable).
Black juvenile offenders (independent variable) are waived to adult court (dependent variable) more often than White juvenile offenders (independent variable).
Hypothesis:An hypothesis is essentially a guess about how the independent variable(s) will impact the dependent variable(s). It’s basically your best guess on the answer to your research question before you have done your research. For example, I hypothesize that women receive lighter prison sentences when compared with men. Another example: I hypothesize that Black juveniles have more contact with the juvenile justice system than White juveniles.General requirements:PART 2Annotated BibliographyStudents must evaluate and report on 6 sources related to your research question identified in Research Assignment 1. At least 4 these sources must be peer reviewed journals. You may use the article you analyzed for Assignment 2.
This should follow the basic outline of your Assignment 2 when you analyzed a peer-reviewed article.This assignment should be around 5 to 6 pages for the body of the assignment, not including the title page or reference page.
