Fall 2019 PSC260.02 Evidence based and Problem Oriented Policing Final
Examination
Your Final exam draws on material found in the Goldstein text, Problem Oriented Policing and
articles read since the midterm this semester. The exam is scheduled by the College so as not to
conflict with other exams. The exam date listed on the Registrar website is THURSDAY
DECEMBER 19 at 8am. The exam will be DUE IN CLASS AT THAT TIME. Answer all ten
questions fully but concisely. Number your answers. Your responses are to be typed in black ink,
Times New Roman, 12 point font, single spaced with normal margins. Be sure to type your name
at the top of the first page and to staple multiple pages! Unattached pages will not be accepted.
Answer all eight (8) questions.
1. Criminal justice agencies and programs have long been preoccupied with crime control
related policies and practices. In the last couple of decades there is some indication that
this focus is shifting, or has shifted, to rehabilitation, habilitation, crime mapping,
evidence- based practices, restorative justice and social support. Choosing examples from
Goldstein, Problem-oriented policing. Chapter 8, regarding alternative measures in
criminal justice practice, choose three (3) alternatives suggested and discuss the evidence
presented that would make these methods preferred.
2. In Goldstein, Problem-oriented policing. Chapters 9 & 10, the author notes the difficulty
in implementing problem oriented policing. Choose two different instances depicted in
the chapter and explain the difficulties faced by departments implementing these problem
solving techniques.
3. Explain the disconnect between policing and science noted by Weisburd & Neyroud.
Further explain how they are rectifying the disconnect, What role does Weisburd &
Neyroud see for the police moving forward.

4. Explain what “harm focused policing” is and how it differs from other forms of problem
solving policing interventions.

5. Describe the “Boston Miracle” from the conditions that warranted the intervention to its
