Use two variables in the textbook dataset to create your own hardship index similar to the one calculated in Example 10.3. Use variables different from the ones used in Example 10.3 and in the Minitab handout. Justify why you selected each variable to include in your index. Each variable must be standardized before they can be combined into an index. See Example 10.3 and the Minitab handout on standardization. Before standardizing, determine whether large values or small values indicate greatest need.
Explain your standardization process. Show the details of the calculation for each variable for one county.Question 2
How will you combine these two variables to create the index? Will you add them or average them? Why?Question 3
Based on this index, which three counties have the greatest hardship? Which three counties have the least hardship?Question 4
For each of the three counties with the highest hardship index and the three counties with the lowest hardship index, identify the county’s unemployment rate and population density. Put the findings into a table that shows your index values, the unemployment rates, and the population density. Does the data in this table suggest a relationship between unemployment, population density, and hardship index? Write a paragraph summarizing how your findings might be explored in more depth to benefit less-well-off counties.
Your report must include:
Details of the standardization for each variable. You must show the formula you used, including identification of the values for the counties with least need and most need. You must show the details of the calculation for each variable for one county.
Detailed answers to all four questions. Your report should include at least two paragraphs for Question 1 (one paragraph per variable and clear explanation of why you selected each variable), at least one paragraph each for Questions 2 and 3, and at least two paragraphs for Question 4. Each paragraph must include at least four sentences.
