General Description:

Select a film that we have NOT discussed and which does NOT appear on the syllabus, and which has been rebooted or remade. Choose a scene from the original film and perform a detailed analysis comparing its music to the music in a comparable scene in the remake/reboot. Your analysis should examine both similarities and differences, and draw conclusions about how the music in these scenes demonstrates how the films approach similar social and cultural issues.

Details:

This paper must be at least 750 words in length, though it can be longer. It is worth 10% of your final grade. You do not need to perform any additional research for this paper, but you are welcome to do so if you believe it will enhance your analysis. While this assignment is open-ended – you can select whatever scene you like from whatever film you want (as long as it’s not on the syllabus), and you can focus on any aspect of audiovisual analysis that interests you – I will be looking for several specific things:

• Is your paper at least 750 words long? If not, you will automatically lose at least one letter grade.

• Does your analysis draw upon terminology and concepts presented in the readings and in lectures?

• Is your essay primarily focused on how – in both versions of your scene – music operates within the cinematic whole in your chosen scene,?

• Does your audiovisual analysis connect musical, foley, visual, and narrative events to one another in order to draw conclusions?

• Do you address the relationship between the original and remade versions of your scene in a detailed and critical fashion?

• Does your essay mainly consist of your original observations, insights, and conclusions, or are you simply regurgitating information you found somewhere?

• If you performed research, do you cite it properly?

• Did you choose information to present carefully, or are you just throwing anything and everything at the reader?

• Are your thoughts well-organized and presented in a clear and compelling fashion?

Structure:

Do not feel obligated to follow the standard five-paragraph essay format. However, your paper should begin with a short introduction (one paragraph in which you name your chosen film and its remake/reboot, identify your chosen scene, and briefly explain how the scene fits into the films). This paragraph should not include a plot summary of your chosen film, but you may briefly summarize your chosen scene’s content. After the introduction, present your findings in whatever fashion seems most effective to you, then wrap things up with a conclusion paragraph (which should simply summarize your findings and provide critical conclusions regarding the use of music in both films).
