- Imagine you are in charge of creating and implementing policies that would support the wellbeing of pregnant people and their fetuses. You can pretend to be in whatever role you like (e.g. director of a community based organization, state senator, world leader, health minister for the united federation of planets).
- You mission is to develop and advocate for 2 – 4 policies that will hopefully mitigate systemic factors that adversely impact pregnant people and their fetuses. By systemic factors, I mean things in the macro- and exo-system of Bronfenbrenner’s ecological model.
- If you want, you can pretend that money doesn’t matter and that there aren’t actually any major barriers to solving problems. Alternatively, you can wrestle with the very real challenges of actually implementing policy changes. In other words, if letting go of the real world helps you develop ideas for the future you want, go for it. If staying grounded in reality helps you think through solutions more effectively, go for it. You do you. The main thing I want you to do is think about big systemic issues and ways we might address them to better support pregnant people and their fetuses.

- Develop a paper/presentation that advocates for 2 – 4 policies that you would like to see implemented in the hopes of better supporting pregnant people and their fetuses. Your paper/presentation should:
- Describe the policy that you would like to enact (e.g. Pregnant people should have free and easy access to healthy food)
- Explain how the policy is connected to a systemic problem (e.g. Poverty is a systemic problem that often limits access to healthy food. This is a major issue for pregnant people because…)
- Explain why the policy would help support pregnant people and their fetuses (e.g. Providing free and easy access to healthy food would support pregnant people and their fetuses because…)
- Use class resources to support your thinking, and remember to cite your sources.
