Reflections on Religion
For this assignment you will do two tasks in one paper. Please organize your paper accordingly designated by Part One, which is the first task, and Part Two, which is the second task.
The first task, Part One, will be a personal narrative about the role of religion in your life. Maybe you are a lifelong believer, or maybe you were never raised in a religious house and dont really know much about it, or maybe you were in one religion but changed. Or maybe you are simply unsure about all of it and just want to reflect a little about that. Whatever it is you can write about it. Please dig deep and do some reflecting. What do you know about religion in general or your religion? What do you wish you knew more about? What do you like most about religion if you have one, and, if you dont, is there something about it you wish you had? Alternatively, if you are not religious what is the most puzzling thing about people who are religious? Really, this is for any thought you have about religion. Whatever it is, tally forth and reflect upon it.
The next task, Part Two, is to reflect a bit on the definition of religion. To do this you will need to read the first part of your textbook that discusses what religion is, and what the study of religion entails. Perhaps more importantly, consider the handouts and discussions we have had, and also think about what a definition is. At this point, I would like you to think very hard on all of these matters, and even think ahead, or imagine, the kinds of things we will be covering in the class. After having done this more thoughtful work hopefully in the mood of schole or leisure I would like to you offer a definition of religion of your own. I would also like to you to offer something of a defense, or apologia, for your definition. You can do this by explaining its parts. Simply put, you must explain why you want to put forth this definition. I fully understand that we have just begun this class and you may have a hard time offering a definition insofar as you havent yet studied religion. That is OK! I realize this. This assignment is not about being correct, it is about thinking, and thinking hard.
