A World Consumed By Consumerism
Introduction
The issue we are facing today revolves around sustainability and the fashion industry.  For many years now, the notion has been “buy, buy, buy” and that more is always better, but this is just not the case.  As consumers continue to buy each and every new style and new trend, the world just cannot handle these increasingly fast production rates.  Every time people make a new purchase they usually get rid of something old they don’t want anymore; this results in a huge build up in textile waste.  Did you know that the equivalent of one garbage truck full of textile waste is thrown out every second (Dorey, 2020).  That alone is mind blowing, and the even crazier part is that most people don’t even know that.  Moving forward, everyone needs to take part in order to make a difference for our planet.

Ways Companies are Sustainable
The reason most people may not know in depth about the issue yet is because not everyone agrees that we need to become more sustainable.  There are many companies out there striving to be more sustainable and taking the steps in order to reduce textile waste.  Zara for example is one company that has done a very good job in becoming more ecofriendly.  Zara operates very fast and changes things up by having less of the same product and more designs.  Thus results in less clothing sitting around and less that is being wasted and thrown into landfills.  Another advantage is that shoppers will want to shop there more due to the different clothing cycling in and out (Chu, 2020).  Zara also takes in many strategies which help the company strive, this includes; listening to feedback, reducing uncertainty, and being willing to change course to adapt (Chu, 2020).  All of these strategies are very key when it comes to satisfying your customers but also being successful.  The way Zara has handled becoming sustainable has proven to be very effective throughout the company when it comes to accomplishing success and satisfaction.
How We Are Not Being Sustainable
Do you really know what happens to your clothes after you throw them away, or what they’re even made of?  Have you ever asked yourself these questions or thought about behind the scenes of the fashion industry?  If not then you might not have any idea what is actually going on within the industry.  The fashion industry is the second largest polluting industry in the world and is also the second largest consumer of water (Dorey, 2020).  The industry is also responsible for producing “more greenhouse gas emissions than all international flights and maritime shipping combined” (Dorey, 2020).  Most importantly, we cannot continue to keep producing clothes that are harming the environment.  There are two key factors in fixing this problem and it is the producers and the consumers.  Apparel companies need to become more aware of the waste and pollution they’re creating and address this to their customers.  Fabrics need to be coming from sustainable sources that can be broken down unlike synthetic fibers that sit for years in landfills.  An initiative has been created called the Make Fashion Circular which big brands are starting to sign.  The goal of the initiative is to improve the fashion industry’s track record when it comes to being clean to the environment.  Also stated in the initiative is to reduce global waste by recycling and reusing raw materials and products.  Another great point that Dorey makes in her article is that, “While recycling is certainly one solution, it is by no means the only solution. In fact, we should be asking a different question: How can we eliminate the need for recycling altogether? How can we design with the end in mind?” (p. 2).  As a global community we need to change the way that we handle fashion.
Combining Ideas
Whether companies believe in sustainability or not, they still see it as an issue and have acknowledged that it is a problem.  While companies cannot be forced to become completely sustainable, spreading the word can help suggest more ideas and growth within the issue and industry.  A compromise that works for both sides but also helps the world become more sustainable, is worrying about individual actions.  Each person needs to become more aware of the products they’re buying and how they’re made then, they can decide if they still would like to purchase, overall more transparency.  If we can focus on individual actions first, more people will become aware and then a bigger change can be made.  Even though sustainable organizations, such as Make Fashion Circular, disagree with companies like Zara, that are doing the bare minimum, both sides agree that sustainable fashion is something that needs to be expressed to the public.
