Please review the Unit 2 Introduction and Required Resources regarding qualitative and quantitative research design. Then, consider your selected evidence-based practice problem/topic from unit 1 and the unit 2 assignment.  Then, respond to the following question(s):


 My topic I chose for Unit 1 is Scalp cooling for patients receiving chemotherapy to prevent chemotherapy-induced alopecia (CIA). My PICOT question is in patients being treated with chemotherapy, how does scalp cooling compared to no scalp cooling affect chemotherapy-induced alopecia.


1.Compare and contrast qualitative and quantitative research designs. Think about this in terms of methodology and outcome.

Both quantitative and qualitative research designs are ways of answering research questions (Burns et al, 2017). All research questions can be answered using one or both designs. Quantitative design focuses on measured or counted data and the outcomes can usually be replicated if the method of collecting data is done the same. Qualitative research designs do not measure data, but it describes data from the perspective of the population being studied. To choose which methodology is best for the research study, one must think of the best way to answer the research question. Regardless of the methodology used, the outcome of the research study should answer the research question being asked.

2.If you were to actually conduct your own research study, would your selected evidence-based practice problem/topic lend itself to a qualitative or quantitative design? (Describe specifics around the topic to support your findings.)


To choose which research design I would use, I must think about what the answer is that I am looking for. I am looking for the efficacy of the scalp cooling procedure at preventing CIA. In the study of Giarrantano et al (2019), the methods that was used to measure efficacy was Deans alopecia scale for hair loss. This measured hair loss on a grade scale from grade 1 (excellent, <25 hair loss) to grade 4 (poor, >75% hair loss) (Giarrantano, 2019). The answer I am looking for is measurable, so I would choose a quantitative approach to my research. If the research question was a problem associated with the emotional aspect of CIA or using scalp cooling methods, I would have chosen a qualitative design to research the perspective of that population.
