General Paper Prompt:
The U.S. southwest has experienced a unique and rich musical history in recent decades. In four (4) pages, discuss how the history and ever-changing experience of Chicana/os has shaped Chicana/o music in the southwest or Mexico. You are free to choose any style of music genre, but your focus is not to summarize the genre, but discuss and compare musical changes to social changes that occur in society. Essentially, prove to me that music parallels society. You will be graded on content and writing style.
Below are some sample prompts that you may also utilize as your topic
- Chicana/os in the southwest have experienced a very unique history, dating from World War II where many Chicana/o youth were criminalized. Consider Mexican American youth during the 1940s-50s and discuss the musical genres that were developed as a response to pachuco and Mexican American youth culture. How is this music reflective of this time period? Does this music exist 50 years later?
- The Mexican corrido has transformed from being a very isolated music genre to being a very mainstream and global genre. Discuss the development of the genre since the early 1900s and examine social occurrences that contribute to the development or impact of the corrido. How is this music reflective of this time period? If the corrido told the story of Mexican history during the Mexican Revolution, do you think it is still a method of transmitting history 100 years later? Do you believe the corrido fuels narco-culture in Mexico?
- Consider the development of the Orquesta Tejana and Conjunto from Texas. How did social developments, such as the 1929 depression trigger intercultural conflict? What was the result of intercultural conflict and how does La Onda Chicana relate to the 1960s-70s Chicano movement?
Your job is to bring music together with historical and present day social issues and discuss how views on minorities, women, sexuality, etc., have developed throughout our history and in present day. You are free to discuss any sort of music development, be it ethnic, ethnic, gender, sexual, etc.
This research paper is a critical analysis of music in the United States. I DO NOT want a summary. Your paper should be interesting and effective. The above are merely suggestions for your final paper. Feel free to discuss any aspect of Chicana/o music presence in the U.S. Before writing a large portion of your paper, be sure to verify your topic with the instructor.
