Research Question
In New graduate nurses (Population), does mentorship program (Intervention) compared to usual nurse residency programs (Comparison) improve nurse retention rates (Outcome) over 2 years (Time)?
Instrument and Description of the type of scale
After each new graduate nurse that completes the mentoring program will be given the Mentoring Program Evaluation to complete. The use of the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses model for Mentor Program tool will be used to assess their evaluation (Szalmasagi, 2018). The AMSN mentoring program tool contents three components: mentor guide, mentee guide, and site coordinator guide (Szalmasagi, 2018). The mentor guide will contain information regarding directions for implementing a mentoring relationship, mentor self-assessment, tips for successful mentoring, mentoring program plan, and program evaluation tools. The mentee guide contains information for success mentoring relationship, satisfaction surveys, and program evaluation tools. Lastly, the site coordinator guide contains information and tips for coordinating a mentoring program, role descriptions, and a timeline for managing the program.
Data collection procedures
The questionnaire will ask each new graduate nurse to comment on the mentor program and if they feel like their participation improved their transition into the new graduate role. These questionaries will be given to each new graduate nurse through email, postal service, or hand delivered; regardless of if they are still employed at the facility. Data regarding retention will be collected by contacting the Human Resource and asking if the number of new graduate nurses that was hired one year prior to the start of the mentor program and finding out if they are still employed at the facility one year after their hire date. Also, data will be collected on how many of the new graduate nurses that completed the mentorship program are still employed at the facility one year after their hire date.
