To begin to solve the problems of American poverty, Americans should/must understand the causes: (1) unemployment, (2) loss of jobs, and (3) the lack of job opportunities and how these factors contribute to persistence of poverty.

You’re your Research Project MUST be 4-6 pages long (10 Paragraphs). To reach 10 Paragraphs, you must double the 5-Paragraph Essay Format:

Introduction – 2 paragraphs
Body Paragraph #1 – 2 paragraphs
Body Paragraph #2 – 2 paragraphs
Body Paragraph #3 – 2 paragraphs
Conclusion – 2 paragraphs

Paragraph 1

1. General points of discussion on your of topic only (2-3 sent.)
Give definition and history of the Problem.
2. Specific points of discussion on your topic only. (2-3 sent.)
Give definition and history of the Causes.

Paragraph 2

3. (So What?) Points of discussion as to why your topic/argument is important. (2-3 sent.)
Explain the connections between the problem of Poverty and the (3) three Causes of your choice.
Explain why it is important for the reader to understand Poverty through the lenses of your Causes.
4. Three-part thesis statement (Points 1, 2, and 3), with (qualifier) quality as argument or (quantifier) quantity of argument (1 sent.)

h. NO Transition Sentence Needed.

The 1-2-page proposal should contain three clearly-marked sections–What? Why? and How? Please compose one hefty paragraph for each section:

How?– How will you go about answering your research questions? What kinds of publications do you think will help you pursue your research question? If you plan to use one of our class readings, mention so here, and explain why this source is important to your research.
