SELF REVIEW: Copy & paste your draft into the U2 Self Review (U2:SR) forum. Once you have posted your draft, use the guidelines given online to review your work.
PURPOSE: To practice skills related to evaluating and analyzing. A response is a writing assignment in which you examine your own reaction to another’s ideas, to what a text claims, or to where a text leads your personal reaction.
KNOWLEDGE: This assignment will help you to become familiar with the following important content knowledge for academic writing:
- reading to express that you have read and understood a text
- analyzing what a text conveys
- responding to another’s argument
- examining your own reaction to another’s argument
- formatting in a standard style sheet
TASKS:
- Re-read the article as well as your summary
- Define what the writer claims.
- Identify the reasons and evidence the writer provides to support the claims.
- Point out any views the writer represents other than his/her own.
- Determine strong and weak points
- Establish your reaction to the piece. Did the work increase your understanding of a particular issue?
- Point out any ways in which the article changed your perspective.
- Evaluate the merit of the work: the importance of its points, its accuracy, completeness, and organization.
- Indicate whether or not you would recommend the work to others, and why.
CRITERIA FOR SUCCESS
- A response should not retell the article in the writer’s own words–that is the purpose of the summary!
- A response must be a clear analysis of a work’s argument and the effectiveness of the support.
- A response must be concise.
- A response must be coherent: It should make sense as a piece of writing in its own right; it should not merely critique the original writing.
- A response must be independent: You are being asked to relate the reading to how effective it is.
- Do not simply restate what the author has written or what you wrote in a summary of the article.
