Description
Your assignment is to revise your previous essay, not merely to correct it.  If you do nothing but fix the errors that I have pointed out, I will feel that I have done all your work for you.  I will give you credit for correction, but not for revision.  You will need to attach a paragraph to the beginning of your essay explaining your process of revision.  What did you rethink? What did you redo? My professor mentioned that some strong points were made in the essay but she’s concerned that a book review was cited instead of the book itself. She says there is no clear thesis and many sentence structure problems. I will upload her comments on the actual essay itself tomorrow. She also mentioned to be sure to spell the author’s name correctly.

Mae Holland
Mae Holland, in Eggers Dave, The Circle, is an intelligent young lady that is fortunate to get a job at, The Circle with the help of her friend, Annie Allerton. The Circle is a powerful techno-company owned by three “wise men”, Tom Stenton, Eamon Bailey and Ty Gospodinov. She is a fresh graduate from Carleton and had always dreamt of working in this company. She is fascinated by the sophisticated inventions such as see change the camera that can provide high-quality footage with minimum effort. They offer a promising future in reducing crimes as the criminal would also be recorded. She receives a warm welcome from Renata who also works for the company. She is mind-blown by the elaborate campus.
Mae has a sympathetic personality although more often insecure with a high urge to please others. While in the company, she aims to do her level best. She deeply cares for Annie, and her ailing father.
Mae Holland is the novel’s protagonist. She is at first seen as dubious towards the company’s policy on privacy, but later on, she advocates for the policies. Mae is malleable: she is willing to do anything for her superiors. She sees privacy as immoral and believes that the world has a responsibility to socialize. Mae Holland embraces the company’s culture that she distances herself from family and old friends. Mae becomes closer to her virtual-online followers that she views them as her friends. Miss Holland prefers a perfunctory affirmation from her viewers to authentic deep connections. Her loyalty to the Circle grows that she does not notice when she’s used as a puppet to manipulate the world into embracing the cosmo-techno social company. She betrays the company’s founder Ty Gospodinov when he questions her on the work ethics on an instant where she almost got arrested (page 223). Mae is told to always have the Seechange camera on her every time. According to Bailey, this is seen as transparency. Her job now becomes touring the customers around the campus. Mae gives into the company’s dishonesty and corrupt ways.
Mae hollands character becomes very useful to Egger in portraying the monopolistic nature of the power-thirsty company. Mae enters into this company as a fresh graduate with an open mind and no prior experience. Egger describes her as a blank slate waiting to be written. She expresses her great discontent with her previous occupation, Mae loathed the work and saw it as a waste of her potential. “Good riddance, Mae thought, to that gulag and all it represented” (page 4). She begins as a customer experience but manages to rise the ladder pretty quickly. Mae is fascinated by the company’s top-notch technology, parties, recreational activities and gyms. Her first day in the job ends in a party.
In the beginning, she struggles to keep up with the company’s online life and its various activities. In her effort to please Dan, her boss and Annie, she becomes encroached to her online Participation Rank (PR) that she’s ranked the most active user (page 83). The Circle launches projects like child-tracking software and crime surveillance cameras. Mae becomes the face of the company and gains the world’s following and loses herself. After an encounter with the police and a conversation with Bailey on transparency, she becomes more disconnected from her loved ones. This changes her personality to the extent that she promises to only enroll her sick father who had multiple sclerosis, health insurance on condition that they install SeeChange cameras at their home (page 361). She becomes more indoctrinated towards the company’s culture that she abandons her life. She is less interested with Kalden and starts paying attention to Francis, who is awkward and pathetic.
Her role in Mercer, her ex-boyfriend’s suicide, ignoring Ty, and indirectly harming Annie, questions her sympathetic personality and reliability as a person. Mercer flees from the grid to disconnect from the Circle’s influence and its technologies. He represents a small portion of the world that is against the company policies. After his death, Mae appears to be sufficient showing no emotions. She is becoming a dull villain who is more inclined to follow the wise men instructions than making a morally good judgement. Her protagonist behavior becomes an obstacle to positive growth; she grows more towards evil.
Dave Egger uses Mae hollands character to expose the effect of technology on the world we live in. Its dehumanizing side. According to Dave TruYou, password product made the Circle very powerful and had changed the internet within a year (page 21). Technology is a double-edged sword it has revolutionized communication and interaction but has also turned us into glorified machines. He also uses her to convey the effect of human rights and privacy issues, in the authors’ perspective knowledge losses its power due to increased use of the surveillance cameras and digital repositories. This can be used to represent today’s generation that values social media as opposed to real human connections.
