Sarah Smarsh’s book, Heartland:A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth, examines intergenerational poverty in one Kansas family, and speaks to larger social institutions that shaped how they experienced poverty.As the book title suggests, Smarsh’s main point is that her family worked hard, and yet were still poor.Why was that?How can we understand poverty within American culture?How you answer these questions should serve as the core of your paper, that is, what you will argue in your thesis statement.
Essay structure:
To answer these questions, discuss at least one specific theme from the Smarsh book: social class, gender (both feminine and masculine), race, labor, rural versus urban spaces, mental health, physical health, addiction, and domestic violence.You may address more than one theme, and indeed, many of these intersect with each other.You should draw from at least two specific examples from the book to discuss the theme and make your point.(Depending on how you present the material, you likely will want to discuss this part in two paragraphs.)
Make meaningful connections from the theme and examples in the Smarsh book to at least one other class source from lessons 5 – 9. This source may include either readings, films, or lectures. The essay should flow well. This means that each paragraph (and you should have paragraphs! One massive block of words is painful to read)should have a topic sentence, each idea in that paragraph connects to that topic sentence, and each paragraph ends by segueing smoothly into the next paragraph.Every paragraph, indeed every idea in your paper, must connect back to your thesis statement.
Your concluding paragraph should reiterate the main points, and reassert your thesis statement. Remind the reader of what they read and why it was important.Do not introduce any new information in this paragraph.
The essay must be free from grammar and spelling errors.
