I know there are a lot of questions here, but as you address each make sure these flow or come together in your Needs Assessment 1.

Defining/Describing Needs Assessments

Needs assessments are tools and methods designed to identify what a particular group of persons lacks to achieve more satisfactory lives.  Need is defined as the gap between real and ideal conditions.

A particular needs assessment is a systematic determination of ‘how much of what’ is needed.  It is a process of identifying, ordering and prioritizing community needs.

Needs assessments are typically carried out in an organizational context.  There are internal and external forces and pressures from segments of community, politics and government.  Their results can be political and generate conflict. Usually a person doesn’t conduct a needs assessment on their own. It takes a team to do a good needs assessment.

Typically, needs assessments attempt to engage as many involved people as possible such as, but not limited to, service providers, management, community members, politicians and funding sources.

Important Definitions

Stakeholders – People directly involved with a particular community and can include clients, service providers, management, community members, politicians, funding sources, and others. Who are the stakeholders in the MSW program? In your practicum or work agency?

Comparative Need – Addresses disparities in service receipt by two or more different groups, i.e., neo-natal care for infants of middle class single parents vs. neo-natal care for infants of poor single parents. What are some normative needs surrounding COVID-19?

Normative Need – Defined by a professional as “This is what you need.”  For example, pregnant women need  certainmedical appointments during pregnancy and to follow a specific food/drink regimen. Normative need comes from research findings, experience and practice wisdom, but normative need can be insensitive to individual’s opinion. What are some normative needs regarding COVID_19?

Felt (perceived need) – Comes from the client’s perspective and thus can aid empowerment; however, very subjective; can be more of a desire. A person may feel they need two cups of coffee each morning to be fully awake. What are some of your perceived needs surrounding COVID-19?

Capacity building- the abilities of community members to make a desired change overtime and across different problems and issues.  The capacity of a community changes overtime. It is not static.
