We visited the site at Hope’s Nose, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) on 12th March, and lies within the English Riviera Geopark. This means that the section is conserved for the general public, students and scientists to visit and study. Rocks of Devonian age are exposed here and contain very interesting features, including some fantastic fossils.
If you attended the fieldtrip you may have notes you can use from the visit to Hope’s Nose. Those of you who did not attend the fieldtrip can use online resources and journal articles to help you. See some suggested references at the end of this document. There will also be a mini Power-point presentation narrated by Matthew to give you some helpful pointers for the assessment.
The task is to describe ‘The environments of deposition and palaeoecology of the Devonian limestones at Hope’s Nose, Torquay’ Your description and discussion of the environments of deposition and palaeoecology of the Devonian  limestones at Hope’s Nose should be in report format and include the following sections:
1. Aims and objectives
2. Data and methodology
3. Geological setting for study area
4. Carbonate sedimentology and succession-
· describe and classify the different limestones using Dunham’s and other classifications (see  the field guide on the DLE for these). These descriptions should be based on and supported by observations and sketches made in the field and/or from the literature.
5. Palaeoecology of the stromatoporoid rich carbonates
6. Discussion –
· discuss what changes in the carbonate rock types and ecology can be observed with time.
· Try to answer the following questions: Where did the stromatoporoid carbonates form on a carbonate platform (eg reef, back reef, lagoon, fore-reef)? What evidence is there for storm events during deposition? Make palaeoenvironmental interpretations about the limestones with evidence to support these.
· this should summarise the palaeoenvironmental setting based on the previous sections.
Presentation Criteria:
Your report should conform to the following presentational criteria
· Have a clear title, with your Student ID number and the module code.
· The report should be word-processed using e.g. Microsoft Word.
