– Thesis Statement:
o Your paper should have a thesis – a point that it is trying to argue or prove. It should not read like a story or narrative of events.
o Without including or attempting to include a thesis statement of any kind, your paper cannot receive a grade in the “A” range for the assignment.
– Evidence:
o Evidence / information used in the paper should come from scholarly readings, assigned videos, and class notes.
o You need to demonstrate that you have read works, so you should have short quotations where appropriate to illustrate key points. If your entire paper is a long block quote or even mostly all quotes – this will affect your grade negatively.
o Make sure that you introduce all quotations and do not just randomly stick them in. For example, do include something like “this person writes …” or “Smith says …”
o Format long quotes correctly. Block quotes of more than 3 lines are single spaced and indented – see a style manual for instructions if you are unfamiliar with how to use them.
o Citations are important and necessary. Please follow a Chicago or Turabian style manual – do not make up your own citation style.
