  1. What are the four principles underlying bioethics? How has COVID 19 presented challenges for each of these principles?  These principles can come into play when looking at who has access to treatment or participates in clinical trials.   This can also include how public policies do public good or public harm.  Provide concrete examples for each principle.

  1. Remembering that all models of medicine started as magical thinking and moved toward science. While the preponderance of evidence supports the western model for most acute illness, this is not the case for chronic disease.  Work though an example describing how each might differ in the treatment of one chronic disease (e.g., hypertension or chronic back pain), comparing at least three potential differences between the Western biomedical model of medicine as practiced today with either Traditional Indian Medicine or Traditional Chinese Medicine.  Also, identify one way both modalities are uses to treat one ailment.

  1. Explain how the health transition is a function of the interplay between the demographic transition and the epidemiologic transition (all stages).  In order to do this you will need to describe the stages of each transition.  Finally, choose one country, and explain at least two social problems associated with their unique place in the intersection of both transitions.

  1. A considerable literature in the United States is devoted to racial disparities along a range of health outcomes. Describe three racial disparities discussed in your text and online notes used in class.  Use concrete examples.  In Western Europe, these would typically be attributed to social class.  Describe the difficulty of isolating race from the potentially confounding effects of social class.

  1.  What does your text mean by the bio-psycho-social model of medicine?   Why did I argue this is not only desirable, but necessary to provide quality care to patients?  What are the challenges to providing care that incorporates the bio-psycho-social model given the current structure of health care in the United States?
