What have been your personal experiences with educational technology (“ed tech”) at the collegiate level (either at university or anywhere else you may have attended college)? In preparation for our consideration of technology in education, explain one positive and one negative experience you have had with ed tech.

Educational technology that has worked

  • Describe one ed tech implementation that has been effective, in your estimation. While the technology must be connected to educational endeavors, your interpretation of “effective” can otherwise be broad; a technology might be effective because it has helped comprehension of material, because you find it convenient (though note the advisory below), because you find it entertaining, some combination of all the above, or something else entirely.
  • Although it may seem self-evident to you why your technology is a positive, do explain carefully why you specifically favor it.
  • The technology you choose can be one either offered or sponsored by a school (Canvas, iClickers, etc.), or can be your own (e.g., an app on your phone). What is important is that you explain its connection to your personal education. What specific aspects of the technology do you find particularly useful? How do you use it? What would your experience have been without it? Does the usefulness of the technology depend upon how it is configured (by faculty, staff, other students) or used by others (e.g., a Canvas discussion board, Slack, Discord)?

Educational technology that has not worked

  • Describe one ed tech implementation that has been ineffective, in your estimation. Presumably, technological implementations in education are designed to facilitate learning. Why has the one you identified not fulfilled this objective? Explain carefully why you disfavor this technology with the same care with which you explained your favored technology.
  • It may well be that you could choose two different components of the same technology for the positive and negative cases. For instance, you find bCourses Quizzes useful but Discussions useless. This is fine, but take care to identify the components clearly.

Rules for this assignment

  • This assignment is not a test of your mastery of sociological concepts. We will for instance have touched upon the concept of technological determinism and its opposite, the notion of technology as socially constructed, by the time this survey is due. However, you should not concern yourself with addressing these themes for this assignment. The survey is meant to be informational (for me) and an exercise in reflection (for you). Everything you need to know to complete the assignment, you arrived with on Day 1 of the course.
  • What is important for this assignment is that you provide useful, explanatory detail about the ed tech that worked and the ed tech that hasn’t worked. There are no right or wrong choices of technologies for this assignment. But I will deduct points for explanations that are too broad and/or show little effort.
  • I am leery of choosing technologies such as AirBears or eduroam if the point is only to observe that WiFi is convenient, or some such self-evident thing. This isn’t very helpful for the purposes of this assignment. In general, choosing a technology for the purpose of avoiding putting effort into the assignment will be received unfavorably.
  • Write no more than 2 total pages, single-spaced. (But if you really have something to get off your chest, I’ll be happy to read further).
